The Apple TV+ nine-part mini-series Masters of the Air, executive produced by Spielberg with Playtone’s Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, is based on Donald L. Miller’s book Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany. It tells the story of the tens of thousands of American bombers who took to the skies in World War II only to be shot down, killed or held captive in Nazi Germany. The film is the next installment in the Band of Brothers franchise alongside The Pacific, also produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. The National World War II Museum in New Orleans Premieres new exhibit Expressions of America featuring Jazz Classic “Thanks for the Memory”

On the eve of Veterans Day, The National World War II Museum in New Orleans premiered its newest attraction, Expressions of America, a first-of-its-kind nighttime sound and light show celebrating the power of individual Americans to impact the world around them during a time of monumental conflict. Hosted by actor and veterans advocate Gary Sinise, the 90-minute experience includes a special custom exhibit highlighting the role of correspondence during the war, a menu of festive food and drinks, and live pre-show entertainment before guests move outdoors to the Parade Ground for the approximately 25-minute sound and light show, followed by original jazz versions of war-era classics including “Thanks for the Memory,” composed by Ralph Rainger with lyrics by Leo Robin, and artistic projections of information about the real-life individuals featured in the show. Blonde is a biographical psychological drama written and directed by Andrew Dominik. Adapted from the bestselling 2000 novel of the same name by Joyce Carol Oates, the film is a fictionalized take on the life of actress Marilyn Monroe, played by Ana de Armas. Blonde reimagines the life of Marilyn Monroe, from her volatile childhood as Norma Jeane through her rise to stardom and romantic entanglements. As in Oates’ 700-page book, the players in Monroe’s life are all identified only by nicknames. The guest that day was Andra Day, who played Billie and received a Golden Globe and nominated for best actress at the Oscars. The movie reminded her that she also had a Leo-Billie Holiday story that took place in the same period as the film, when Billie got arrested in 1947 for possession of heroin and she was banned from NYC. The Mirrorball champions on the 29th season of Dancing With the Stars are crowned after their perfect score on freestyle dance to “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend”

Dancing with the Stars wrapped up its 2020 series and its 29th overall on November 23 crowning a new Mirrorball Trophy winner. Former “Bachelorette” Kaitlyn Bristowe and her partner Artem Chigvintsev were crowned the Mirrorball Champions of “Dancing With the Stars” after they performed their freestyle dance to the “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” version from the musical “Moulin Rouge.” When host Tyra Banks announced the news, Kaitlyn and Artem were absolutely thrilled and so were their fans. Sky’s Original Dark Comedy Drama series I Hate Suzie features “Bye Bye, Baby”

Sky’s original dark comedy drama series I Hate Suzie was created by Lucy Prebble and Billie Piper and produced by Bad Wolf in association with Sky Studios. The series premiered in the U.K. on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV in August of 2020 and it made its US debut on HBO Max on November of 2020. I Hate Suzie follows the life of actress Suzie Pickles (Piper) whose life is thrown into turmoil when her phone is hacked and compromising photographs of her are leaked. The viewers see the unraveling of its main character’s life in eight sharply drawn episodes, each named, more or less, after a stage of grief. James Kent’s period melodrama The Aftermath 

The Aftermath is a 2019 drama film starring Keira Knightley, directed by James Kent and written by Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, based on the 2013 novel of the same name by Rhidian Brook. The Aftermath is set in postwar Germany in 1946. In the aftermath of World War II, a British colonel and his wife are assigned to live in Hamburg during the post-war reconstruction. The world premiere of Moulin Rouge! The Musical

The world premiere of Moulin Rouge! The Musical, based on Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 beloved motion picture, will play at Boston’s crown jewel Emerson Colonial Theatre this summer of 2018. The pre-Broadway engagement features a book by John Logan, direction by Alex Timbers and choreography by Sonya Tayeh. Seth MacFarlane’s new album In Full Swing receives lofty praises

Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill — From Broadway to the West End

Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill opened on Broadway at Circle in the Square during April 2014. The play takes place in March 1959 in South Philadelphia where Billie Holiday is performing in a run-down bar, recounting some events in her life, during one of her last performances before her passing in July 1959. Directed by Lonny Price, the production starred Audra McDonald as Billie Holiday and featured Shelton Becton as pianist Jimmy Powers. Lady Day originally premiered in 1986 at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia, and played both off and on Broadway. McDonald will reprise her role as Lady Day in the West End at the Wyndham’s Theatre, from June 17, 2017 through September 9, 2017. The 92nd Street Y Celebrates The Classics of Leo Robin

The 92nd Street Y celebrated Songbook Classics By Unsung Lyricists with a wonderful ensemble of actors from Broadway shows and an orchestra on May 6, 7 and 8, 2017. Many of the popular standards penned by songwriter Leo Robin were covered including “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” and “Bye Bye, Baby” from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. The show was exquisite with its mission to pay special tribute to all the great songwriters who went out to Hollywood and created some of the greatest songs ever written. Leo Robin moved from New York, where he was working on Broadway shows, to Hollywood where he wrote some of the most memorable scores for films and became the Dean of Lyricists in Hollywood. The 92nd Street Y honored Leo Robin on many occasions over the years and he attended “The Lyrics and Lyricists: Lyrics For Film” Program when it presented an evening at The 92nd Street Y in 1982 to honor Leo Robin’s unforgettable contribution to musical film.
